Angle of Repose Tester | Powder Flowability & Bulk Material Testing Equipment (RT-730D)

Additional information

Surface active agents -Powders and granules – Measurement of the angle of repose

  • Conical Funnel: A large-diameter glass or conical funnel to allow the powder to flow and form a cone.
  • Funnel Nozzles/Orifices: Different sizes of nozzles can be used at the bottom of the funnel to control the rate of powder flow.
  • Swiveling Funnel Closure: A mechanism, often a slider, to open and release the powder from the funnel to start the test.
  • Test Platform/Base Plate: A platform, often a dish with a 100mm diameter, to collect the flowing powder and form a cone.
  • Digital Height Gauge: A device used to measure the height of the powder cone’s peak from the platform.
  • Digital Scale: Used in conjunction with a stopwatch to measure the powder flow rate.
  • Stirrer: An optional rotating or manual stirrer is included for powders that are difficult to flow.
  • Adjustable Height Stand: A stand that allows for the precise adjustment and locking of the funnel’s height, ensuring it is set at a standard height, such as 75mm.
  • Stable Base with Spirit Level: A stable base with an integrated spirit level to ensure the device is perfectly level during the test.
  • Powder Collecting Tray: A removable tray that collects the powder after it flows, for easy cleaning.
  • Optional Stirrer: A manual or motorized stirrer may be used for powders that do not flow easily.

Angle of Repose Tester

What is an angle of repose tester?

Angle of repose testing equipment typically consists of a standardized circular test platform, a funnel, and a digital height gauge to measure the cone height formed by a flowing powder. The material is poured through the funnel onto the platform to form a cone, and its height is then measured to calculate the angle of repose, a key indicator of a powder’s flowability.

Angle of Repose Tester

The Angle of Repose Tester is a precision instrument designed to determine the flowability and cohesion characteristics of powders and granular materials. By measuring the natural angle formed when a material is poured freely, it provides essential data for evaluating powder flow behavior, handling performance, and bulk density properties.

This tester is widely used in fertilizer, chemical, pharmaceutical, food, and powder metallurgy industries for quality control and research applications.

Key Features

  • Accurate Measurement: Determines the natural angle of repose precisely and repeatably.

  • Durable Construction: Made of high-quality stainless steel for corrosion resistance and easy cleaning.

  • Adjustable Design: Funnel height can be adjusted to suit different materials and test standards.

  • Simple Operation: Easy to set up, pour, and measure — suitable for both lab and field use.

  • Standard Compliant: Conforms to common methods such as ISO 4324 and ASTM C1444.

Angle of Repose Tester

How to Measure the Angle of Repose

1. Test Principle

When a powder or granular material is poured through a funnel onto a flat surface, it forms a natural conical pile.
The angle between the surface of the pile and the horizontal base is known as the Angle of Repose (θ), which reflects the flowability of the material.

tan⁡(θ)=hr\tan(θ) = \frac{h}{r}

where h = height of the pile, and r = radius of the pile base.

2. Test Procedure

  1. Setup: Place the base plate horizontally and fix the funnel at a set height (typically 100 mm).

  2. Fill the Funnel: Pour the powder sample gently until the funnel is full.

  3. Release the Sample: Open the funnel to allow the material to flow freely and form a cone.

  4. Measure: Record the height (h) and radius (r) of the pile.

  5. Calculate: Determine the angle of repose using the formula above.

  6. Repeat: Perform three tests and take the average value.

3. Interpretation of Results

Angle of Repose (°) Flowability Description
< 30° Excellent Free-flowing material
30–40° Good Easy to handle
40–45° Fair Moderate flow
> 45° Poor Cohesive or sticky powder

4. Precautions

  • Ensure the sample is dry and homogeneous.

  • Keep funnel height constant during all tests.

  • Avoid vibration or air disturbance.

  • Clean all parts after each test for consistent results.
